Boost Your Productivity in 5 Minutes with this Actor Hack

Dec 17, 2018

I don't know about you, but as the days get shorter and colder I am STRUGGLING with motivation.

I look at my to-do list in the morning and the temptation to open a new browser and watch a YouTube video or two (or five) is great.

I put off the thing I need to do, I berate myself for putting it off, make myself a cup of coffee, I check my Instagram, berate myself some more, and then before I know it it's noon.

But here's the wild thing:

Once I'm doing the activity I'm supposed to be doing, it's not that hard.

I rarely find myself ten minutes into a yoga class saying to myself, "Why am I doing this?! This is soooo haaaaaarrrrrd."

(Note: I don't do hot yoga. That could very well be a different story...)

But truth be told, I have this experience with 99% of the activities I put off doing.

The activity itself isn't painful—Getting started is.

That's where the five minute rule can help us!

Last week I did an...

What Acting School Taught Me About Handling Difficult Transitions

Nov 16, 2018

I woke up feeling a little weird this morning.

Not terrible—just oddly uninspired and unmotivated.

I did NOT feel like writing a blog post.

(This, unfortunately, is usually a pretty good sign there’s something on my mind that I should write a blog about.)

That’s why I’m in your feed today.

To talk about transitions.

Fall is hands down my favorite season. (The sweaters, the tea, the crunchy leaves, what’s not to like?!?!)

But, like many people, the stark shift from summer to winter can leave me feeling unmoored. My schedule has changed, but I haven’t yet fallen into the daily and weekly routines that ground me and make me feel like a person.  Auditions have started to pick up, but we’re not in the reliable chaos of winter audition season yet.

In short, we’re in between.

And if you’ve ever taken a song interpretation class, you know that “in between” is one of the most difficult and crucially important...

"I Never Call Out" is the Theatre Equivalent of "Most of My Friends are Guys"

Jul 11, 2018

Alright, folks.

Y’all. We gotta talk about some internalized BS going on in the theatre community.

Did you read that recent New York Post article so charmingly entitled “Diana Rigg annoyed that ‘My Fair Lady’ star is taking Sundays off”?

Well, if you didn’t, you can probably pick up what happened from context clues.

Let me catch you up:

Theatre veteran Dame Diana Rigg very publicly shared her annoyance that her co-star Lauren Ambrose will be taking off Sunday matinees.

This has caused some online hubbub in theatre community, to put it very mildly.

A debate seems to be raging, largely along generational lines, about whether or not it’s time to abandon the mantra, “The show must go on.”

And, yes, as you can probably guess from my writing style, I am on the post-Cold War side of that generational divide.

But please rest assured that I am not here to drag Dame Diana Rigg.

I may be young, but I’m...

How to Overcome Audition Fatigue and Prevent Actor Burnout

Apr 17, 2018

I gotta be honest with you, I am TIRED.

Audition Season seems to get longer every year and I’m seeing burnout in every holding room I walk into these days.

I’m seeing dancers reach into their bags at ECCs and pull out one character shoe and one tap shoe.

It’s not a good look. (Or sound.)

But here’s the thing…

Have you ever decided to take a little brain break in May only to wake up in September realizing you’ve achieved none of your artistic goals?

It’s like deciding you’re going to take a midday nap and sleeping through the night and into the the next day…For four months straight.

Instead of sleeping away your summer, follow these basic guidelines to make sure you’re resting and not slacking.

1. SET A TIME LIMIT

Don’t want to oversleep? Set an alarm!

I know it seems simple, but as actor/entrepreneurs we don’t always have the luxury of a set schedule.

If you worked a basic 9-5 job, you might know that...

Should I add this Song to My Book (The Answer in Two Easy Steps)

Sep 19, 2016

How do I know if I should  add this song to my book?

As a rep coach, I get asked this question ALL the time. We all have those songs. The ones we flirt with forever, but ultimately keep in the back of our book or in the front pocket of our binder. Why the fear of commitment, people?! Put a ring on it, already! (Or, at the very least, a sheet protector.) I think people over-complicate this issue.  They ask themselves the wrong questions. They obsess over whether a song is “overdone,” or “range-y enough”, or “type appropriate.”

And why are these questions particularly maddening?

Because YOU can’t answer them.

These are all questions that attempt to read the mind of a casting director. The unspoken beginning to each of the above questions is: “Will a casting director think this song is…” And if there is one thing I’ve heard from every casting director I’ve taken a class with in this city it’s,...

How to Stop Breaking Promises to Yourself

Apr 22, 2016

Summer stock season is coming to a close, and you know what that means…

Time to take stock of your choices.

(And yes, I took stock of my decision to make that joke and I REGRET NOTHING!!!)

Annnnyway…

How did this summer go for you?

Were you the productivity monster you told yourself you’d be?!

Did you clean your room, update your audition book, take 3 dance classes a week, eliminate gluten from your diet, update your website, hit the gym every morning,  finish the “Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” practice guitar everyday, read 20 new plays, reconcile with your father, and quit your day job?!

Did you?!??!

….

Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh, me neither.

But let’s be real, that is an unreasonable list! If those are your goals, you are setting yourself up for failure.

This is one of the traps I see my clients falling into all the time.

Let me know if this pattern sounds familiar:

  1. An events spurs you to action and jump starts your motivation (i.e....
